DEPOTTING This is a tutorial on how to get your MAC eyeshadows out of the little pots and into a 4 pan or 15 pan palette. You can always skip this and buy the eyeshadows in pan form (they are magnetic and all you do is slip them into the eyeshadow palette) but I prefer to buy the pot form and depot them myself because then I can use the empty pots for Back 2 MAC. You can read more about Back 2 MAC here.Gather your supplies!

You will need: Eyeshadow(s) Candle Knife Lighter Tongs or metal salad grabbers I prefer to do this on top of the stove but a kitchen counter is just as good. Light your candle. Open the eyshadow and insert the knife into the back part of the eyeshadow - place your knife between the plastic insert that holds the pan and the inside of the pot. I know a lot of people insert their knives into the front but I have damaged quite a few eyeshadows that way because I end up missing the groove and stabbing the eyeshadow, lol. I find that inserting the knife into the back groove is a safer bet and makes the removing of the plastic insert easier. When you have succesfully detatched the plastic insert from the pot it should like the picture above. Next grab the plastic insert with your tongs or salad grabbers (make sure they are metal or stainless steel) and hold the insert over the flame from your candle for approximately 15 -20 seconds. When you see the bottom of the plastic insert beginning to melt, carefully place it on top of your towel or other item of choice. I chose to use a spoon sort of thing. Take your knife and push it into the melted plastic while holding one side of the insert with your tongs. You can use your finger too but be carefull not to burn yourself. This will detatch the pan from the insert. It should look something like this. Be very carefull not to push the knife into the back of insert too hard because I have broken some eyeshadows this way. The hardest part is done! You have depotted your eyeshadow. Take your pot and hold it over the flame for approximately 5 seconds. You can do this using your hand. Just hold the pot from the top flap. This will loosen the glue from the label on the bottom of the po that contains the eyeshadow’s name and finish. (i.e., velux pearl, satin) You will see a bubble forming between the pot and the label. Take your knife and insert it between the pot and the label (or scratch at the label with your finger) and this should seperate the label from the pot. You will want to place a round magnet between your eyeshadow pan and your label. This will ensure that your pan does not move inside the quad or palette and break. Place the pan into your quad or 15 pan palette. Save your empties so you can B2M for free stuff! |
